Methven is surrounded by the chequerboard fields of the Canterbury Plains and dwarfed by a magnificent
backdrop of mountains. This once quiet, rural village is now a mecca for sports lovers from within
New Zealand and overseas. Not only famous for the excellent skiing on nearby Mt Hutt, it is also
the place to be if you wish to fish, play golf, jetboat, tramp, mountain bike ride, or hot air balloon.
Of course, not all the excitement goes on in the Great Outdoors! Methven has a lively nightlife,
with a variety of restaurants, bars and a nightclub.
Situated only 92 kms from Christchurch, Methven is the perfect holiday destination, with all
the advantages of a city, but with the added bonus of pollution-free, clear mountain air, breath-taking
scenery, wide open spaces and friendly people. Who could ask for more!
With its wide range of venues and accommodation, Methven is in increasing demand as the ideal
conference centre. In such agreeable surroundings, it is possible for people to relax, forget
about work-a-day problems and concentrate on the conference itself. At the end of the day, participants
can unwind taking in a game of golf, a walk, or perhaps, a spot of fishing. Sounds inviting, doesn't
it?!
Two very popular events during the year that draw many folk to the area are the Summer School,
which assembles for a week in January, and the Mount Hutt Snow Festival held to celebrate the
beginning of winter. The Summer School provides tuition in such diverse interests as golf, fishing,
painting and writing, while the Festival is famous for its carnival atmosphere and provides a
fun-filled week for all. For a while, everyone in the Village becomes a little "Methven Crazy."
